Outplay, Outwit, Outlast
August 1, 2010

The 2010 fall season of the popular "Survivor" television show  is being filmed along the southwestern coast of Nicaragua (just north of the border with Costa Rico). This might bring the western hemisphere's 2nd poorest nation (Haiti remains the poorest western country) some temporary notoriety, but most viewers will pay little attention to the real Nicaragua.  Certainly, nothing of the country's culture or people will be learned through viewing this show.

With an estimated 6 million inhabitants, the poverty among most of the population leaves many searching for answers.  Trisha and I and our teams of short-term missionaries bring the true hope of Jesus Christ to thousands of Nicaraguans each year.    Now God has opened a new door to reach the 8,000 educated young adults in the 3rd largest private university in the country.  This will open doors in other universities (both private and public).

The recent July missions confirmed that Trisha and I are on target in focusing most of our evangelistic efforts in our favorite Central American venue.  During the next 12 months we will expand our reach to cities outside of Managua, introduce a new and effective evangelistic method to medical missions and reach deeper into the university student population.

So, if we may, we will take the "Survivor" motto in a new direction.

Outplay - through the power of the Holy Spirit, apply resources effectively and diligently to further the Kingdom of Christ in partnership with teams of mature, serious Christians.

Outwit - through the wisdom that can only come from prayer, wise counsel and the word of God, conform our priorities to His in our lives and our ministry, associate only with faithful and worthy partners and remain steadfast to the truth of God's word.

Outlast - by faith, trust God to provide for our financial needs through the obedience of His people as we approach the traditional "retirement" age, desiring that God will completely use us up before retiring us to Heaven.

There has never been a time of greater need for you to join us.  Now is the time to PRAY - GO - GIVE - SEND.

Hebron Baptist Church - Managua
July 3-12, 2010

Our team of 17 had the privilege of serving at one of our favorite (and largest) partners in Nicaragua.  Pastor Arturo and his team welcomed us with a grand reception and dinner when the team arrived on Saturday evening, July 3.

Welcome Jody's teamAfter worship on Sunday, we got to work preparing for the student registration and the events of the week.   The puppet team prepared the stage and began rehearsals while the rest of the team welcomed students and conducted interviews.  Through the week we conducted four events each day.

Practically Speaking Children's English (up to 12 years) had 300+ children each day and as many as 60 adults.

Practically Speaking Teen English (13-15 years) saw 125+ attend.

2:30-5:00 and 6:00-8:30 - 2 sessions of Practically Speaking English (16 and up) resulted in 250+ in attendance.

Due to the crowds, we scheduled separate Sunday Celebration events.  The Sunday Celebration for Children was packed with about 500 children and their families.  Then the adult Sunday Celebration was attended by nearly 600.

More than 130 of our students said "yes" to Christ.

Report:

University in Managua Hosts Practically Speaking English

While in Managua during June, Trisha and I were invited to meet with the officials at one of the top private universities of Managua.  The next thing we knew we had scheduled a Practically Speaking English event for July 12-16.

Trisha and I along with Bob and Gail Meade held three sessions of classes (one morning and two afternoon sessions).  More than 125 university students attended the week long course.

As the week neared its end, the teachers shared their testimonies with their classes.  On Friday, Jody shared a direct gospel message to all the students.  More than 60 of the university students said "yes" to Christ.  90+ wanted more information about our faith and almost as many expressed interest in studying the Bible.

Our great partner church, Libertad Baptist, will coordinate the follow-up with Baptist churches located in the students' various neighborhoods.

In our out-briefing with the university staff we were invited to return as soon as possible.  We are sure to hold more English classes at University of Managua.
