Strength in Numbers?
January 25, 2010
I learned another important lesson at our ministry in Nicaragua at the beginning of this month.  God + nothing = everything.  I will elaborate in an article below.  First...

Haiti is on all our minds and hearts, as it should be, during this time of incredible tragedy, suffering and death.  Remember to pray for the Haitians, especially the born-again Christians who are suffering along with their countrymen.  They especially need our prayers because they are also showing the love of Christ as they give help to those around them.

Pray also for the safety of our troops and other relief and aid workers who are there doing what they can in the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

There are two organizations that I trust completely to handle donations in these situations.  Click on a logo to donate.

Strength in Numbers?

With a team of only 5, going into one of our largest venues in Nicaragua, I was stressed to say the least.  I imagined turning away hundreds of disappointed Nicaraguans  (something we have never done) with another "yanqui" promise broken.

In the past we have had teams of 15+ at this venue with many hundreds of children, teens and adults as English students.  We had prayed, of course, but my flesh still told me I had failed in recruiting.  I needn't have worried.  God knew exactly what He was doing.

Unknown to us, the host pastor had some problems with his advertising campaign.  Again, something that had never happened before.  As a result of this we had exactly the number of students that the five of us could handle.  Not one child, teen or adult more than we could accommodate showed up.

Then the brick finally hit me -

God + nothing = everything.

In other words, He
wasn't looking for strength tn the number of people on the team. He was looking for us to trust Him with the process as well as the result.  We immediately took on the attitude  of the Old Testament judge, Shamgar (look him up).  Do what you can, with what you have, where you are, when you need to do it.  (Thank you Bill Glass for these words of wisdom.)

Nicaragua Continues to Be Open to the Gospel

Our small team (Jill, Trisha, Dan, Dwayne and Jody) had the thrill of working together  with our wonderful Nicaraguan partners during our busy 9 days at Libertad Baptist Church.  While the event was unusually small, we still saw 32 indicate a "yes" to Christ.

Benjamin dutifully translated all day, every day.  Samuel kept us wonderfully and plentifully fed.  Juan tickled the ivories through the day during each assembly session.  Many others worked in the background to minister to those who came to learn English.  These dear ones are typical of our Baptist partners in Nicaragua.  They blessed us in every way, and as always, they are ready to do the follow-up with every one of our students.

After we finished at Libertad Baptist Church, Trisha and I taught a one week Practically Speaking English Course at the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua (U.P.O.L.I.).  Since the class was in the evening, we spent the days meeting more pastors and visiting other partners, including an introduction to the community at "La Chureca" (slang for "the dump".
Watch our project schedule for new opportunities, including some medical teams.
