What do olives, wood, mountains and heat have in common?

Los Olivos (the Olives) Baptist Church Filled to Overflowing - The Gopsel message continues to save in Nicaragua
Las Maderas, Nicaragua

What do olives, wood, mountains and heat have in common?  Not much unless you are at Los Olivos (the olives) Baptist Church, in Las Maderas (the woods), at the mountains in the heat of a Nicaraguan summer.

This small town to the northeast of Managua is in the foothills of the prominent mountain ranges of northern Nicaragua.  While this was by far the smallest town to host us in Nicaragua, the Practically Speaking English events still brought sufficient crowds of children, teenagers and adults into the church.

More than 160 children attended the children's 5-day English program.  They learned some basic English words and phrases, sang songs in English, heard exciting stories from the Bible and listened intently as our partner, Pastor Josue presented the gospel.  Pastor Josue observed that most of the children in the daily crowd were not churched.

About 180 teens and adults enrolled in the adult Practically Speaking English programs.  Twice a day, for 6 days the students gathered at the church for the 2 1/2 hour class sessions.  Through the week, Pastor Josue and the church leaders became more and more excited as they saw the unchurched develop relationships with their teachers and with the church.  Somewhat a repeat of what took place just a month before in San Rafael del Sur, in the history of the church, there had never been so many non-Christians in attendance at any event.  When the course was completed, 68 of those in the adult program indicated a "Yes" to Jesus Christ.

The closing event, Sunday Celebration, saw a standing room only crowd in the church as students, their families and friends, and other guests filled the sanctuary to sing, hear special musical presentations and hear the gospel once more.

Pastor Josue's follow-up team is already at work contacting each student and beginning the process of discipleship for those who said "yes", and beginning the process of relationship with all the others.

In addition to the events held at the church, the some of the team used the morning hours to present the Practically Speaking Children's English program at the local primary school.  The 150+ children (some of whom also attended the church event in the afternoon) and all the teachers enjoyed learning some English, singing and hearing the gospel of Christ.

Two of our group spent the mornings at the local high school giving the English classes there our special brand of English teaching.

The Jody Kennedy International volunteer team consisted of 6 from Hulen Street Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas, 1 from Bryan, Texas and 1 from St. Andrews Baptist Church of Panama City, Florida.

There are plenty of opportunties for you to join Jody and Trisha as a volunteer teacher or teacher's assistant.  Check our project schedule or contact us immediately to find out how you can be part of this thrilling mission which sees hundreds come to Christ each year.

Little Martin, son of our partner Pastor Martin Paiz,  just turned 3 years old.  After much prayer and many medical tests we now know he has asthma as well as an inability to produce certain vitamins.  No life threatening condition was found.  With special vitamin treatments and ongoing care he has already begun to grow and play like any normal 3 year old. Thank you for your generous help for his medical care.
